Advantage/Disadvantage Essay

This Task 2 essay type asks you to evaluate the pros and cons of a situation, decision, or trend — sometimes with a personal opinion, sometimes without.

Common phrasing:

“Discuss the advantages and disadvantages…”
“Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?”
“What are the advantages and disadvantages of…?”

Your job:
Present both sides clearly, logically, and often make a judgment.

Here’s a high-scoring 4-paragraph model:

Introduction

• Introduce the topic with a general statement
• Paraphrase the question
• If required, clearly state your position
E.g.: “While there are both benefits and drawbacks, I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.”

Body Paragraph 1 – Advantages

• Topic sentence
• Explanation of one main advantage
• Real-world or personal example
• Optional second point or elaboration

Body Paragraph 2 – Disadvantages

• Topic sentence
• Explain the key drawback
• Example from society, education, tech, etc.
• Compare or contrast with the previous paragraph if useful

Conclusion

• Summarize both sides

Band 8 Model Essay:

The rise of remote work, powered by digital communication tools, has transformed the modern workforce. While there are clear benefits in flexibility and efficiency, this shift also presents challenges related to social interaction and work-life balance.

One major advantage of remote work is increased flexibility. Employees can work from any location, saving commuting time and allowing a better balance between professional and personal life. For example, a study by Forbes (2021) found that remote workers report 25% higher job satisfaction due to flexible scheduling. Moreover, companies save costs on office space and utilities, making remote work financially beneficial for organizations.

However, remote work also has significant drawbacks. A key issue is social isolation. Without face-to-face interaction, employees may feel disconnected from their team, which can reduce morale and teamwork. In addition, blurred boundaries between home and work life can lead to burnout. For instance, remote employees often report checking emails outside working hours, creating stress over time.

Planning Strategy for Advantage/Disadvantage Essays

Read the question carefully.
Make sure you know whether it asks for your opinion or just an evaluation.
Brainstorm 1–2 strong points per side.
Choose quality, not quantity — pick ideas that you can explain clearly and fully.
Map out the paragraph flow.
Decide which side comes first, and what your conclusion will be. A clear structure = higher cohesion.
Use linking phrases with purpose.
Show contrast and logic — not just “Firstly,” but “One clear benefit is…” / “However, this comes with a major drawback…”
Tie every idea back to the question.
Don’t let examples drift. Every sentence must serve the task.
